Here are the answers to questions our veterinarian frequently receives regarding puppy care and kitten care.

Puppy & Kitten Care FAQs

When Should A New Puppy or Kitten See the Vet for the First Time?

Puppies and kittens should have their first vet examination around the age of 8 weeks. When you first bring your new pet to our veterinarian, we will begin a series of vaccinations to protect them against common diseases that pose a threat to young animals. During this visit, the vet will make sure your pet is healthy and growing normally.

What Vaccinations Should Puppies and Kittens Receive?

Puppies should receive immunizations against parvovirus, distemper, adenovirus, and rabies. Kittens should be vaccinated against feline distemper, calicivirus, feline herpes virus, and rabies. Our veterinarian will provide details on when these vaccines should be given and additional vaccines that will be needed.

How Should I Feed My Puppy or Kitten?

Puppies should be fed 4 times a day when they are between 6 to 13 weeks old, gradually reducing the number of meals until they reach adulthood at 1 year when they can be fed 2 meals each day. Kittens should be allowed to feed freely throughout the day in the first few weeks, gradually reducing the feedings to 3 to 4 per day until 1 year when you can do two feedings per day.

Why Are Spaying and Neutering So Important?

Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that prevent animals from reproducing. Animal control agencies deal with thousands of unwanted pets each year. Spay and neutering reduce the burden of unwanted pets in animal shelters. It also prevents your pet from developing cancer of the reproductive organs.
